As with other areas of Criminal Law, there are a huge variety of offences arising out of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which is the key piece of legislation governing the possession and supply of drugs in the UK.

We have extensive experience of assisting people who face allegations involving the misuse of drugs.

At one end of scale, if a Defendant is charged with straightforward possession of a small amount of cannabis, which some people believe to be very trivial, but is still an offence, that can be tried either in the Magistrates' or the Crown Court and frequently leads to the passing of Community Orders, requiring the Defendant, for example, to perform unpaid work in the community, a sentance which can have a profound effect on one’s reputation.

At the highest end of the scale, we have a track record in acting for those Defendants involved in the Importation of Class ‘A’ controlled substances such as heroin and cocaine, often in vast quantities which are offences that are thoroughly investigated and vigorously prosecuted by both the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Revenue & Customs.

If one is convicted of this type of offence then the sentence at the end of the case isn’t necessarily an end of the matter.

The Crown Prosecution Service, on behalf of the Treasury will then instigate proceedings to seize any capital assets from that convicted Defendant under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
